What are managed IT services?
Managed IT services means one provider takes ongoing responsibility for your technology for a predictable monthly fee: monitoring it, patching it, securing it, backing it up and helping your people when something goes wrong. The difference from hourly IT support is timing. A managed provider is paid to prevent problems, so it watches your systems around the clock instead of waiting for your call.
At Preferred Data the plan rate covers your people, and the equipment we manage (servers, firewalls, switches, wireless access points and storage) is counted during discovery and covered at the same plan level on the same agreement. That keeps equipment-heavy businesses such as manufacturers priced on what we actually look after, and counts are trued up monthly as you grow.
- Workstations and servers: monitoring, patching and endpoint detection and response
- Microsoft 365: licensing matched to each role, business email, MFA and backup
- Networks: firewalls, switches and WiFi, designed and supported by our network infrastructure team
- Security: 24/7 managed detection and response, email threat protection and staff awareness training, backed by our cybersecurity services
- Backup: workstation and Microsoft 365 backup that we restore-test, with more options under backup and disaster recovery
- Helpdesk and planning: a support desk your staff can call, plus technology reviews and budgeting
Key takeaway: Managed IT replaces unpredictable repair bills with one accountable team that is paid to keep problems from happening.
What is included in each Preferred Data managed IT plan?
Preferred Data offers three cumulative plans: Preferred Essentials, Preferred Professional and Preferred Complete. Each includes everything in the plan before it, and each includes a monthly allowance of technician hours for the whole account: 2 at Essentials, 4 at Professional and 8 at Complete. Full details and a quote request are on the pricing page.
| What you get | Essentials | Professional | Complete |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helpdesk hours | Remote helpdesk, business hours | Priority response with extended hours | 24/7 support, including after-hours and weekends |
| Technician hours included each month (whole account) | 2 | 4 | 8 |
| 24/7 threat detection and response (EDR and MDR) | Included | Included | Included |
| Patching, MFA, email threat protection, awareness training, restore-tested backup | Included | Included | Included |
| Microsoft 365 licensing matched to each role | Included | Included | Included |
| Identity threat detection, password manager, email encryption, zero-trust VPN and DNS filtering | Not included | Included | Included |
| On-site visits | Quoted before work starts | Included when we cannot fix it remotely | Unlimited on-site support |
| User onboarding and offboarding | Not included | Included | Included |
| Planning | Annual technology review | Quarterly business reviews, IT roadmap and budget | Dedicated vCIO with a monthly strategy cadence |
| Vulnerability scanning and annual security assessment | Not included | Not included | Included |
| Compliance readiness management (CMMC and NIST 800-171) | Not included | Add-on | Included |
Support beyond the included hours is billable and quoted before the work starts, and unused hours do not carry into the next month. Hardware, projects such as office moves or server migrations, custom programming and PDC Software licensing are quoted separately, in writing, so the monthly price does not quietly grow.
Preferred Professional is the plan we recommend for most businesses. Essentials fits small teams that need the security baseline done properly. Complete fits businesses that want IT fully off their plate, work toward CMMC, or want a dedicated vCIO.
How much do managed IT services cost in North Carolina?
Managed IT is normally priced per user per month, and the right number depends on how many people and devices you have and which plan you choose. Preferred Data does not publish a rate card: we count your users, servers, firewalls, switches, access points and storage during a free discovery and give you a written, per-user quote with no obligation.
The useful comparison is what the alternatives cost. One in-house systems administrator is a full salary before benefits, training and tools: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for network and computer systems administrators at $99,130 (May 2025). One person also takes vacations and cannot watch your network at 3 a.m.
The other comparison is the cost of doing nothing. IBM's Cost of a Data Breach Report 2026 puts the global average cost of a breach at $4.99 million, a 12% increase over the prior year. For typical cost drivers, read our guide to IT support costs for North Carolina small businesses, or rough out a budget with our free IT tools.
Key takeaway: Ask any provider for a written, per-user quote that lists what is and is not included. Preferred Data prices after discovery so the quote reflects what we will actually manage.
Managed IT vs break-fix vs in-house IT: which is right for your business?
Break-fix bills by the hour when something breaks, so the provider earns more when your systems fail. In-house IT gives you a dedicated person but concentrates your knowledge and coverage in one salary. Managed IT is a fixed monthly agreement that pays the provider to prevent problems, with round-the-clock security monitoring a single employee cannot provide.
| Factor | Break-fix | In-house IT | Managed IT (Preferred Data) |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Hourly, after the problem | Salary, benefits, training and tools | Per user per month, quoted in writing |
| Who watches for problems | Nobody until you call | Your employee, during working hours | Monitoring and 24/7 threat detection and response on every plan |
| Provider incentive | More failures, more billable hours | Keep the lights on | Fewer failures, lower cost to serve |
| Coverage when someone is out | Whoever is available | Gaps during vacation, illness or turnover | A team, with the helpdesk hours your plan includes |
| Security baseline | Only if you ask and pay | Depends on one person's skills | MFA, patching, EDR, MDR and restore-tested backup included |
| Best fit | Very small offices with little at stake | Larger firms that need someone on site daily | Businesses that run on their data and want predictable cost |

Why do North Carolina manufacturers need an MSP that understands the plant floor?
North Carolina had about 450,000 manufacturing jobs in August 2026 (preliminary), according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and plant networks are targets. In the 2026 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, ransomware appeared in 48% of breaches, and exploited software flaws (31%) overtook stolen credentials as the leading way in for the first time, per Verizon.
Manufacturers carry more equipment per person than an office, run older systems that cannot always be patched on a normal schedule, and lose production when the network stops. Preferred Data has written and supported business software for manufacturers and distributors since 1987, so we understand how order entry, inventory and the shop floor depend on the network.
- Equipment is counted and covered on the same agreement, so a device-heavy plant is priced on what we manage
- Plant-floor (OT) and office networks segmented through our network infrastructure services
- Compliance readiness management for defense suppliers working toward CMMC, included in Preferred Complete
- Industry pages for manufacturing, furniture and textile businesses
Key takeaway: For a manufacturer, IT downtime is lost production. See what that costs in the true cost of IT downtime for North Carolina manufacturers.
What security is included in managed IT?
Every Preferred Data plan, including the smallest, includes 24/7 threat detection and response monitored by people, multi-factor authentication, patching, email threat protection, security awareness training and backups we verify by restoring them. Those controls matter: Microsoft research shows MFA can block more than 99.2% of account compromise attacks.
We do not let clients remove pieces of the baseline to lower the price. Monitoring without response means nobody acts on the alert, and backup without restore testing means you find out it failed on the worst possible day. If budget is the concern, the answer is a smaller plan, not a hollowed-out one.
The baseline is built to what cyber-insurance carriers expect to see. Preferred Professional adds identity threat detection, email encryption and zero-trust VPN, and Preferred Complete adds recurring vulnerability scanning and an annual security assessment. For security work outside a plan, see our cybersecurity services.

Managed IT questions North Carolina businesses ask us
How much do managed IT services cost in North Carolina?
Managed IT is usually priced per user per month, and the total depends on your headcount, the equipment being managed and the plan you choose. Preferred Data does not publish a rate card; we count your users and devices during a free discovery and send a written quote with no obligation. Request one on the pricing page or call (336) 886-3282.
What is the difference between managed IT and break-fix IT support?
Break-fix providers bill by the hour after something breaks, so costs are unpredictable and nobody watches your systems in between. A managed IT provider charges a fixed monthly fee to monitor, patch, secure and support your technology continuously. The managed provider is paid to prevent problems, the break-fix provider is paid when they happen.
Is 24/7 support included in every plan?
Every plan includes 24/7 threat detection and response and around-the-clock endpoint monitoring. The helpdesk itself runs during business hours on Preferred Essentials, with extended hours and priority response on Preferred Professional, and 24/7 including weekends on Preferred Complete.
How many support hours are included each month?
Preferred Essentials includes 2 technician hours a month, Preferred Professional 4 and Preferred Complete 8. The hours are for the whole account, not per person, and cover day-to-day support of the services the plan manages. Work beyond them is quoted before it starts, and unused hours do not carry over.
Do you provide on-site IT support in High Point, Greensboro and the Piedmont Triad?
Yes. Our office is in High Point and we provide on-site support anywhere within 200 miles, including Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Charlotte and Raleigh. Preferred Professional includes on-site visits when we cannot fix a problem remotely, and Preferred Complete includes unlimited on-site support.
Can we remove services from a plan to lower the price?
No. The security baseline in every plan (24/7 detection and response, MFA, patching, email protection, training and restore-tested backup) works as a set, and removing a piece leaves a gap you may not notice until an incident. If budget is the concern, a smaller plan is the honest answer, and anything you decline is stated plainly in your proposal.
Does managed IT help with CMMC or cyber insurance requirements?
Every plan is built to the controls cyber-insurance carriers now expect, such as MFA, EDR and tested backup. Preferred Complete includes compliance readiness management for CMMC and NIST 800-171, and it is an add-on to Preferred Professional. CMMC certification itself is granted by an authorized third-party assessor, not by Preferred Data.
What happens when we switch to Preferred Data from another provider?
We start with a discovery walk-through of your users, devices and systems, then send a written proposal that states what your plan does and does not cover. Onboarding is scoped and quoted before any work starts, and your equipment counts are trued up monthly after that.
